Its the beginning of Wednesday and I’m finally attending a few sessions, other than my own, which also means that I have solid WiFi, too. We are staying at the Hilton with most of the other ACE Directors, but residence in tower three around the pool appears to be similar to the third circle of hell when it comes to any type of service no matter if we refer to WiFi or even cellphone service. My sessions on Sunday were a joy to present. I was quite nervous about presenting on no surprise deployments, as it was the first time…

It’s less than a week away for me and I’ve finally dug myself out of the hole that I created for myself, (nothing like digging your own grave, let me tell you… :)) Tim and I will be taking the California Zephyr train out again this year. After the wonderful trip last year, we upgraded our reservations this year for the 33hr trip out and I also upgraded my camera to make the most of the fall aspen colors that we’ll experience on the trip out! I can’t say enough about this trip, it is lovely, get to bypass all…

I’m seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train, so that has to be good, right? 🙂 I wanted to send out a quick post and remind folks that I will be presenting at SQL Saturday #169 in Denver, hashtag #sqlsat169 presenting on the seemingly popular “Oracle for the SQL Server DBA”. I really enjoy these sessions, as the MsSQL DBA’s are always a refreshing change from the more common Oracle world I’ve been in the last year and they are in turn, happy to talk to an Oracle consultant who really, truly believes…

As many know, I’ve taken on the mantle of Training Days Director this year for RMOUG’s Training Days 2013. I don’t have much time in the month of August, but wanted to remind everyone that the submission for abstracts is open and can be found on the main RMOUG website page. We are also looking for volunteers for the 2013 event. Anyone who is interested, please see the website for details and the volunteer page. I’m very thrilled to say that I think this will be the best Training Days conference yet! I’ve attended a number of conferences this last…

Yes, it was HOT! We are not talking just the conference here, but San Antonio in June, especially this June, which meant the conference could only held at a resort with a water park onsite. If you hadn’t taken a gander at the JW Marriott resort in San Antonio, please enjoy one of my pictures from the fifth floor of the resort: This was a welcome release from the heat on many a day, (yes, some of us attended the “Lazy River Symposium” on Sunday instead of the ones offered through the conferences…:)) and after the sessions during the weekdays.…

This next week I’ll be speaking at KSCOPE 2012, helping out with the database track and flying the Enkitec flag, as well as hanging out at the Enkitec booth at the event. Come by and see us, we have some cool stuff on hand and to discuss. If you are interested in anything Exadata, Exalogic, you know the drill, let us know and we can tell you all about our upcoming E4 conference in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area on August 13-14th, E4 I will be attending the E4 event and the day after, August 15th, will be speaking on “Oracle…

I’ve been part of multiple conversations, via Twitter, Facebook, personal and professional email on the choice of housing Enterprise Managers on a Virtual Machine. Now in the title, I am not to be taken seriously, this is a bit of sarcasm, so please know, I am having a bit of fun with the title and hope to seriously look the logic of why I avoid VM’s for my Enterprise Manager homes. The conversations didn’t get heated, but included many who were passionately against an EM on VM, another set who stated that “Virtualization is the future, including the Enterprise Manager- …

I ended up so wrapped up in everything going on when I returned home that I never did get my Miracle Oracle World 2012 post out on my blog, (bad DBA Goth Princess!:)) so here it is! Miracle Oracle World, (aka MOW2012, hashtag #MOW2012) is a yearly event held by Mogens Noorgard and his company Miracle, (http://www.miracleas.dk/ ) at Hotel Legoland in Billund, Denmark each year. This year was no exception and I was thrilled when Mogens asked me while in attendance at RMOUG’s Training Days if I would come to Denmark and do my presentation on EM12c, (then let…

I am preparing to fly out to Denmark tomorrow for Miracle Open World, 2012 in Billund, Denmark, MOW2012 It will be my first time to Europe, so I’m highly anticipating the journey and conference. I also had the pleasure of guest blogging on ODTUG’s blog this week: ODTUG’s Blog I’m all packed, ready to go and ramping up for KSCOPE 2012 in June!! Enkitec will have a huge booth, no doubt and we will have a solid group of folks speaking at the event!

~ The least questioned assumptions are often the most questionable ~ Paul Broca I’ve always found assumptions to be one of the most common cause of failures in software releases/maintenance windows. If I had a dime for every time I’ve heard, “I thought you were going to take care of/do that…” or “I didn’t involve you earlier because I thought the steps you were responsible for were so easy…”, well, you know the saying and I’d be rich. Assumptions causing participation of the DBA too late into a project, release or maintenance is widespread enough when you are onsite, but…

Two things to be happy about today! 1st- Enkitec did a lovely announcement on Enkitec regarding my coming on board. I just arrived last night after three days at the main office in Irving, Tx, (Dallas area is lovely with all the fields of Blue Bonnet flowers this time of year…) and am psyched about working remotely for them from my home, northwest of Denver. 2nd- I have a wonderful opportunity to speak this evening at Colorado Springs SQL Pass group on “Oracle for the SQL Server DBA”. SpringsSQL It’s only going to get crazier the next two months from…

I’m forwarding out the latest KSCOPE 2012 Email. I love their stuff!! ———————————————————————————— The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas… And some of the brightest stars of the Oracle world will light up the scene at ODTUG’s Kscope12, San Antonio, June 24-28. Celebrated around the world for its top-notch content, outstanding networking opportunities, and memorable special events, ODTUG Kscope is unquestionably THE premier user conference for Oracle training. Kscope12 promises to deliver the goods again this year! At last year’s special event, ODTUGgers were putting on the Ritz aboard the Queen Mary. At…

I’ve been again, unfortunately, reminded what makes a poor work environment for a DBA or Developer. Eddie Awad had sent this out and the second one really resonated with me: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/on-leadership/how-to-completely-utterly-destroy-an-employees-work-life/2012/03/05/gIQAxU3iuR_story.html?tid=sm_twitter_washingtonpost I refer to this in the IT world as the “technical bully syndrome” and it’s quite common in the arena. It’s not because it’s a male dominated group- I’ve seen bullies come in all shapes and sizes, along with being of both genders. In fact, there are a couple studies out there that say women managers and leads are more likely to bully a subordinate than a male is.…

This is not an “I’m against Oracle Best Practices” article. This is not an “I’m preaching against histograms” article. This is not an article telling folks that they should EVER take the steps or the choices that are presented in this article. I’m also going to refer to the wonderful post by Greg Rahn as to the reasons why what works in my environment would most likely NOT work in yours: http://structureddata.org/2008/10/14/dbms_stats-method_opt-and-for-all-indexed-columns/ What this article IS: An honest account of how a unique database design was impacted when changing from a previously researched method of stats collection to post an…

As many of you know, I’ve been a bit busy since RMOUG Training Days finding a number of presentation opportunities and while I was at it, a new gig with Enkitec. I am finally sitting down and putting to paper what a great year the RMOUG Training Days conference had for 2012. As everyone is still reeling from the great keynote from Cary Millsap, (so glad I was wrong about screwing up my passenger pick-up schedule, thinking I’d left our keynote speaker at the airport!!) His speech was enlightening, enjoyable and worth every minute of a heavy morning commute to…

Graham Wood was kind enough to send me a quick email and let me know that my presentation slides weren’t downloading correctly from RMOUG’s website, so I’ve put them here for anyone that may like to have them. I’m still recovering from the post RMOUG Training Day festivities, aka Foak Table, which was held up in Breckenridge again this year. I will make sure to blog about Training Days and the post event at a later date, but until then, here is a link to my slides. Please email me with any questions or comments you may have- always glad…

As busy as I am with the 11g project, (no real weekends off for 9 weekends and counting… :P) I wanted to take some time out to write on the upcoming RMOUG Training Days 2012. For those of you Oracle techies, DBA or Developer, this is a must attend and for any who do choose to travel and attend- kudos to you, good choice. As one of the directors on the RMOUG board, I can attest to the incredible amount of time and resources that have been invested into what is easily, the best grass-roots, Oracle conference around. John Jeunette,…
