This is my first blog post that isn’t on a technical subject, but this one has been rolling around in my head the last couple days… Jessica Ridgeway’s home is not far from my own. My ex-husband owned a home just four blocks from hers and my dogs played at the dog park in the open space off of Simms St., two blocks over. Yes, still catching up on Blog posts… 🙂 Monday is the official start of Oracle Open World. I planned to be onsite at the Enkitec booth from the time the exhibitors hall opened and I was a few minutes early. Its the beginning of Wednesday and I’m finally attending a few sessions, other than my own, which also means that I have solid WiFi, too. We are staying at the Hilton with most of the other ACE Directors, but residence in tower three around the pool appears to be similar to the third circle of hell when it comes to any type of service no matter if we refer to WiFi or even cellphone service. It’s less than a week away for me and I’ve finally dug myself out of the hole that I created for myself, (nothing like digging your own grave, let me tell you… :)) Tim and I will be taking the California Zephyr train out again this year. As many know, I’ve taken on the mantle of Training Days Director this year for RMOUG’s Training Days 2013. While cleaning up a development environment the other day, attempted to drop a tablespace and received the error ORA-01555, Rollback Segment 0 with Name “system” too Small… A quick search on google pointed me to the MOS doc 862469.1 which results in both ORA-604 and ORA-1555 on the SYSTEM RBS and assures the reader that this is not a code bug in Oracle, but rather is due to the system rollback segment being too small. Due to a fix for bug 7313166, it is now possible for data dictionary transaction binding to generate much larger amounts of undo than before. …

Any of us in the DBA world know that HPUX doesn’t get a “lot of love” from Oracle. It’s one of those Operating Systems that due to the time and resource restraints on Oracle to provide the level of support for their core OS platforms and products, demands that it is “supported” but will not receive the first line of development that Linux or Solaris will. With that said, I have a clients who do prefer HPUX with Oracle products with Windows a close second. They have numerous Windows VM environments for test and non-VM for production which serves them…

Yes, it was HOT! We are not talking just the conference here, but San Antonio in June, especially this June, which meant the conference could only held at a resort with a water park onsite. Metric settings, alerting, notifications and escalations have been enhanced in EM12c to support the demands that are falling heavier on the DBA and the larger support scale of the database environment, (ASM, Exadata, middle-tier systems, etc…) As frustrated as I know some folks became when trouble-shooting alerting issues in previous versions of the Enterprise Manager, it should be acknowledged that EM12c has many new features and a new interface for this important part of the Enterprise Manager. Flashback Recovery Area is a common gotcha in many locations as time goes by, so I thought it might be worthwhile to review, since for me, it’s all new. These are instructions that allowed me to migrate over a large library of EM12c jobs from an existing, split EM console, (Linux) and OMS Repository(Windows) to a single server environment without requiring me to recreate them new.
