Yes, still catching up on Blog posts… 🙂 Monday is the official start of Oracle Open World. I planned to be onsite at the Enkitec booth from the time the exhibitors hall opened and I was a few minutes early. I hadn’t received an exhibitors ribbon, (one of the few missing from my extended display from my badge…) and so I waited patiently and chatted with a couple of folks who had attended one of my sessions the day before. Upon entering the exhibition hall, you realize why vendors flock to this conference in hopes of promoting their company. The…

Its the beginning of Wednesday and I’m finally attending a few sessions, other than my own, which also means that I have solid WiFi, too. We are staying at the Hilton with most of the other ACE Directors, but residence in tower three around the pool appears to be similar to the third circle of hell when it comes to any type of service no matter if we refer to WiFi or even cellphone service. My sessions on Sunday were a joy to present. I was quite nervous about presenting on no surprise deployments, as it was the first time…

It’s less than a week away for me and I’ve finally dug myself out of the hole that I created for myself, (nothing like digging your own grave, let me tell you… :)) Tim and I will be taking the California Zephyr train out again this year. After the wonderful trip last year, we upgraded our reservations this year for the 33hr trip out and I also upgraded my camera to make the most of the fall aspen colors that we’ll experience on the trip out! I can’t say enough about this trip, it is lovely, get to bypass all…

I’m seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train, so that has to be good, right? 🙂 I wanted to send out a quick post and remind folks that I will be presenting at SQL Saturday #169 in Denver, hashtag #sqlsat169 presenting on the seemingly popular “Oracle for the SQL Server DBA”. I really enjoy these sessions, as the MsSQL DBA’s are always a refreshing change from the more common Oracle world I’ve been in the last year and they are in turn, happy to talk to an Oracle consultant who really, truly believes…

I would like to thank James Murtagh, Redgate and everyone who attended the webinar today on ASH and AWR Performance Data. You can find my slides at the Redgate site and here. I have added links in a new section of my Scripts tab on this site with all the ASH queries, please let me know if you see any that appear to be missing, I uploaded these pretty quick before returning to assist a client this morning! 🙂 Thank you again to Redgate and to all those who joined us!

As many know, I’ve taken on the mantle of Training Days Director this year for RMOUG’s Training Days 2013. I don’t have much time in the month of August, but wanted to remind everyone that the submission for abstracts is open and can be found on the main RMOUG website page. We are also looking for volunteers for the 2013 event. Anyone who is interested, please see the website for details and the volunteer page. I’m very thrilled to say that I think this will be the best Training Days conference yet! I’ve attended a number of conferences this last…

While cleaning up a development environment the other day, attempted to drop a tablespace and received the error ORA-01555, Rollback Segment 0 with Name “system” too Small… A quick search on google pointed me to the MOS doc 862469.1 which results in both ORA-604 and ORA-1555 on the SYSTEM RBS and assures the reader that this is not a code bug in Oracle, but rather is due to the system rollback segment being too small. Due to a fix for bug 7313166, it is now possible for data dictionary transaction binding to generate much larger amounts of undo than before. …

Any of us in the DBA world know that HPUX doesn’t get a “lot of love” from Oracle. It’s one of those Operating Systems that due to the time and resource restraints on Oracle to provide the level of support for their core OS platforms and products, demands that it is “supported” but will not receive the first line of development that Linux or Solaris will. With that said, I have a clients who do prefer HPUX with Oracle products with Windows a close second. They have numerous Windows VM environments for test and non-VM for production which serves them…

Yes, it was HOT! We are not talking just the conference here, but San Antonio in June, especially this June, which meant the conference could only held at a resort with a water park onsite. If you hadn’t taken a gander at the JW Marriott resort in San Antonio, please enjoy one of my pictures from the fifth floor of the resort: This was a welcome release from the heat on many a day, (yes, some of us attended the “Lazy River Symposium” on Sunday instead of the ones offered through the conferences…:)) and after the sessions during the weekdays.…

Metric settings, alerting, notifications and escalations have been enhanced in EM12c to support the demands that are falling heavier on the DBA and the larger support scale of the database environment, (ASM, Exadata, middle-tier systems, etc…) As frustrated as I know some folks became when trouble-shooting alerting issues in previous versions of the Enterprise Manager, it should be acknowledged that EM12c has many new features and a new interface for this important part of the Enterprise Manager. I know many times, I’m so busy keeping my eye on the ball, that I can miss what’s stealing third base right under…

I’ve been part of multiple conversations, via Twitter, Facebook, personal and professional email on the choice of housing Enterprise Managers on a Virtual Machine. Now in the title, I am not to be taken seriously, this is a bit of sarcasm, so please know, I am having a bit of fun with the title and hope to seriously look the logic of why I avoid VM’s for my Enterprise Manager homes. The conversations didn’t get heated, but included many who were passionately against an EM on VM, another set who stated that “Virtualization is the future, including the Enterprise Manager- …

Flashback Recovery Area is a common gotcha in many locations as time goes by, so I thought it might be worthwhile to review, since for me, it’s all new. My last two shops, due to design, had no use for it… Flashback Recovery Area, (FRA) is an intriguing feature and should not be confused as the same as the flashback feature- The ability to flashback to a given time or flashback a table when something has gone wrong has benefits over recovery that is easy for anyone who’s had the to perform either task can appertain. Per Andy Colvin,…

These are instructions that allowed me to migrate over a large library of EM12c jobs from an existing, split EM console, (Linux) and OMS Repository(Windows) to a single server environment without requiring me to recreate them new. Disclaimer** The migration is a multi-step process that was performed on: A NEW EM12c 12.0.1.0 with the latest bundle patch, OS 64-bit Linux 11.2.0.3.0 repository a FULL backup of the OMS repository before performing. A full documentation of your EM jobs that are up to date! The source environment the EM jobs were datapumped from: 11.2.0.3.0 OMS repository on Windows 2008 EM12c, without…
