There is a flurry of excitement about Enterprise Manager 13c and I’m blown away by how many customers are looking not just to install and test out the new release, but have plans already underway to upgrade to it. At Oracle, we’re covering a lot of information that will help make that upgrade easier and I want to make sure I share what we learn with the public so you can be as cool about upgrades as we are. Your Repository is Going to be a Single Tenant Database 12c You MUST upgrade your repository, (OMR) to 12.1.0.2 Also plan on applying the…

I’ve been discussing for years about the importance of network to database performance, especially once I started working on VLDBs, (Very Large Databases) but its a topic that often is disregarded. Now that I’m working more and more in the cloud, it’s become more evident the importance of the network to our survival. For each and every cloud project I’ve been involved in, there is evidently going to be multiple challenges that turn to the network administrator for a solution. I don’t blame the administrator in any way when he becomes exasperated by our requests. As it is my solemn…

To assist users as they plan out their upgrades and new Enterprise Manager environments, I wanted to go over a few subtle, but important changes from EM12c, 12.1.0.5 to the newest release, the much anticipated EM13c, 13.1.0.0. EM Processes One of the things you’ll notice when starting an EM12c from the command line is WHAT is started. $ ./emctl start oms Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 5 Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. I’d had some difficulty with WiFi consistently staying connected on each of my Raspberry Pi units. I’d had a little time to look into it, but no research had offered an answer and the only fixes I’d come up with was a shell script I wrote to force a restart of the NIC, which helped some, but no improvement when I added an antenna, (I considered all the wires, sensors, etc. might be interfering with the signal.) Finally this weekend, started to dig around and noted that although in the user interface, it showed both connections to my home WiFi and…

The only thing that is constant is change. There were some major changes to Enterprise Manager with 13c and many of them may seem small to someone who knows the product well, but then again, it may trip you up as you’re accustomed to features working as you knew them in EM12c. One of these features is the manual edition of targets through the guided process. Adding a Target The Setup menu is still on the right, it just has some company now in the new EM13c interface: Click on Setup, Add Target, Add Targets Manually. This is where the…

As I patiently wait for approvals to post my Oracle Management Cloud blog posts, I thought I would just post on Enterprise Manager 13c and answer questions that have been posed to me via email and comments. Is there anything new I need to watch for as I install EM13c? Your management repository database should be a single-tenant 12.1.0.2 database. Disable adaptive_features parameter in the database you will use for your repository. Update the /etc/security/limits.conf file to set soft nofiles to 30000 from previous common setting of 8192 session_cached_cursors parameter should be set to 500 Even though it may warn you…

I’m thrilled to see the outpouring of support for EM13c already out with it just being announced on Friday! As technologists all over the world jump in and start installing the newest and greatest version of Enterprise Manager, there is a second group already working on the task of upgrading their existing EM12c environments, (seen a few already, including one from Gokhan!) Along with other requirements, like setting optimizer_adaptive_features set to false, there is pre-requisite that I’d like to recommend that everyone perform on any EM12c environment before endeavoring on an upgrade- do a health check with EM Diagnostics. Enterprise…

SQL Monitor is one cool tool. Via EM12c, it empowers everyone, (yes, that means the developer, too, so give them the access to view this data via Cloud Control, please!) This is a top five list, but it doesn’t stop there, just remember, this is my favorite features when using Cloud Control with SQL Monitoring. Once logged into the database, you can gain access to SQL Monitor by clicking on Performance –> SQL Monitoring. 1. High Level View The main view of active and inactive processing, (just remember, SQL Monitor processes will age out, so keep that in mind that this…

After my AWR Warehouse session at DOAG in Nuremberg, Germany last week, an attendee asked me if he really needed to use trace files anymore with the value provided by AWR, (Automatic Workload Repository) and ASH, (Active Session History.) I responded that trace files were incredibly valuable and should never be discounted. To use an analogy, when I was 22 years old, and entered a doctor’s office missing a small percentage of my visual field after an apparent migraine, doctors used a number of different “tools” at their disposal in an attempt to diagnose what had happened. They first started…

Working with test data is always fun and teaches those of us inside Oracle how best to use the new products that will be offered to benefit customers. To me, it’s pretty straight forward and I didn’t first understand why it was necessary, but as I sit in on calls as we do performance testing of these great, new products, I understand why they need to direct so many, so often. Anything performance is as much a mindset as it is a science. Application Performance Monitor, aka APM, is no different. I didn’t exactly “follow” the hands on labs each time we’ve been…

This Saturday I’ll be part of a nationwide event being put on by the Raspberry Pi Organization and Barnes and Noble book stores. Makers Faire’s have been gaining international attention as the place to see really cool tech and inventions “in the wild” by everyday people making a difference. Barnes and Noble Maker’s Faire Event I’ll be presenting at my local Westminster, CO store and am really looking forward to the event. I was approached by Matt Richardson from the Raspberry Pi organization to participate and I was really honored to be picked to be part of this. The event…

So I’m about to depart for one day in San Antonio, Tx. to present at the International Performance and Capacity Conference, but I wanted to try to get another blog post out, this time regarding my survival at the 2015 Oracle Open World. I’m not sure if it just that the schedule was a month later than usual or that it was just more demanding this year, but I left on Friday, feeling utterly exhausted and judging by the tweets and posts from others on social media, I don’t think I was the only one! I always regret what I didn’t…

This is one of about 40 blog posts I’ve been eagerly awaiting for permission to post on the Oracle Management Cloud, (OMC)! There are three main products that will be offered initially through the Oracle Management Cloud– Application Performance Monitoring, (APM) Log Analytics IT Analytics This post will focus on one area of the third offering of IT Analytics– Database Performance Analytics. How can advanced IT Analytics investigate database performance at the cloud level vs. on premise? We’ll take a look deeper into this Oracle Management Cloud feature today and hopefully give you just a taste of this incredible upcoming suite…

There is an incredible power with the simple act of doing. People have a tendency to complain about the world, but there are only a few that refuse to simply accept it as it is and reach out to change it. The Gift, The Anarchy This video with the Red Pill Analytics guys, Stewart and Kevin, was a great opportunity to talk about something that is very important to folks like Jeremy Harms, (@EmeraldCube) and I. Jeremy is very active in the Atlanta area with his Code Crew events, introducing technology to locations that may not have the resources to…

The following is an example of rolling a virtual database (VDB) back in time with Delphix Express, the free version of Delphix. Delphix by default keeps a 2 week window of changes for virtual databases (configurable to 2 months, 2 years etc). Thus we can go back in time to any point in that time window. Why would we want to go back in time? Maybe something went wrong. For example VDBs are typically used by developers who aren’t as versed in databases as a DBA. What happens when a developer accidentally drops a table yet there was other work…

What if I’m a developer or QA person using a copy of production database to do my work. What if my copy of production is now out of date and I want to refresh my data with the data as it is on production. Below is a video of how to refresh a virtual database to the freshest data from the source database: This example uses the free version of Delphix called “Delphix Express” and “Landshark” demo environment consisting of two VMs a source VM with a source database and a target VM with no database originally where we provision a virtual database.…

So in honor of coaching a Python introduction class with Devoxx4Kids this weekend, I thought I would update my pass the pigs game and add in the scoring and just rewrite it a little. If you aren’t familiar with this fun little game, here’s the gist- It consists of two pigs that you roll like dice. Depending on how the pigs land, you get a particular score- I’ve simplified my original script even a bit more and added a function to set up the roll. I’ve added the scoring in, along with information on if you roll doubles and the…
