The Best Answers to the Most Common Oracle on Azure Questions

There are only a few Oracle on Azure SMEs out there.  OK, let’s be honest, the majority of the brain power is living in one floating home in Portland, Oregon and that’s not a good thing in many ways.

It’s always difficult to specialize in a non-native solution at any company, but Microsoft is such an awesome place to be employed and our work is so critical to the overall success to Azure migrations that I’m very happy to do what I do.

To help scale, I blog whenever I can on the questions that I most commonly end up answering.  Here’s the top ten questions and the content that addresses them:

“If I migrate to a third-party cloud, I’m going to pay twice what I would if I stay onpremises or go to OCI.”

“I have to have RAC, RAC is HA and I’m going to need it.”

A lot of DBAs aren’t as familiar with Oracle DataGuard as many would think.  Even though it’s a phenomenal product, they may have never used it, so knowing the ins and outs of the best Oracle product to use with Oracle on Azure is important.

I highly recommend the following documentation and guidelines from Oracle.  The Product team in charge of DataGuard is fantastic at Oracle, so why go anywhere else to learn about this?

Oracle Data Guard Concepts and Administration, 19c

If you read about Oracle HA in Azure, you will see that I’ve recommended Oracle Data Guard Fast Start Failover for those environments that need to do automatic failover in case of an Availability Zone failure.  To learn more about this feature, check out Oracle’s documentation:

If you’re looking for an answer to RAC One-Node, consider using an OS cluster solution like Pacemaker or SIOS:

“I migrated Oracle to Azure and while I migrated the database, I also did an upgrade to 19c and am now having much higher resource usage, including a lot of CPU.  What should I check first?”

“I want to migrate off of Exadata and wonder if I can move it to Azure?  What data might I look at in an AWR to determine if Azure is a good fit?”
