OMS and OMR Performance- Part III, Metrics Page

Before heading off to UKOUG’s Tech 14 conference, thought I would jump back from the Agents performance page and look into the very important page in the Oracle Management Service, (OMS) and Oracle Management Repository, (OMR) regarding metrics.  Standard metrics collection is demanding in itself, so when we add plugins, metric extensions and manual metric collection changes, it’s important to know how these changes can impact the performance of the Enterprise Manager 12c, (EM12c) Cloud Control environment. We have returned to the same location in the EM12c console page: Setup–>Manage Cloud Control –> Repository.  The Repository Page through three tabs,…

Agents Management Via EM12c Release 4 Console

I’m going to take a break from the OMS/OMR Performance pages and jump over to the Agents page in release 12.1.0.4.  You can access this page from the Setup menu drop down in EMCC: Main Agent Management Page The Agents Management page will default to show you all agents and looks very similar to the All Targets page when filtered by a target type, but this page focuses on Agents, something the All Targets page just doesn’t do well no matter how you filter. A few things are going to stand out when you come to the Agents Management page-…

Why Women Should Consider a Smartwatch

I keep having this conversation over and over, in retail stores, restaurants and other establishments- women coming up to me and asking, “Can you tell me about that watch you have on?” It made me realize that it could be really intimidating to: 1.  Ask questions of the sales staff in most stores. 2.  The benefits that I noticed I get from the smartwatch are not always the same for men. 3.  Seeing a woman wearing one lets them know that they are something they may want to consider. So, even though I’m hoping everyone will benefit from this post,…

Retrieving Bind Values from SQL Monitor in EM12c Release 4

I know others may want to know how to do this and I had challenges until Gagan Chawla, a teammate from Oracle, was kind enough to point out how to still get to this hidden, little gold nugget, so I’m posting it here for others! Up till database plug-in 12.1.0.5, while in SQL Monitor SQL ID details page, you could click on a button called View Report and quickly view a large amount of valuable data about a SQL statement that had executed.  One of the sections in this report was binds, which listed what values were being passed for…

Removing Redundant Startup/Restart for the OMS Service in Windows

I’ve been told many times that the OMS for EM12c can take quite some time to start on Windows.  Some told me it took anywhere from three to up to fifteen minutes and wanted to know why.  I’ve done some research on the challenge and it is a complex one. Let’s start this post by stating that even though I’m focusing on the OMS service that is part of the Windows installation of EM12c from Oracle, that in no way is it to blame, nor is it the only application to have this problem, (so this post may help many…

EM12c, Rel. 4, OMS and OMR Health, Part II

There are a large number of “moving parts” when performance tuning or trouble shooting an Enterprise Manager environment.  The new EM performance features, (available in release 12.1.0.4) are there to assist you in understanding the source of the issue and can really make the difference for those that are unfamiliar with the challenges of Weblogic, java, network or other complexities that make up EM12c and aren’t commonly thought of as part of the DBA’s job role. Now that we’ve finished with the Health Overview, we can look deeper into the health and performance of the two most well known components…

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Command Line Interface is Available!

The new Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Command Line Interface book is available via a number of locations, including Amazon and directly from Apress.  If you are an EM12c fanatic or just learning and want to learn more, consider the new book that will show you why the command line returns the DBA to the golden age, empowering Enterprise Manager to script and enable tasks at a global level!

    EM12c Release 4, Health Overview

As part of the projects I work on at Oracle, it’s often ensuring that those customers that wish to deploy Enterprise Manager, (EM12c) to large environments, have the correct settings and are tuned to offer the best performance from the Oracle Management repository database, weblogic and up to the console URL’s accessed by users.  This means that these large environments often receive recommendations from our experts  that differ from what EM12c comes “out of the box” with. For those that aren’t receiving internal Oracle training on what to look for and how to tune EM12c tiers, there are some new…

Metric Thresholds and the Power to Adapt

Metric thresholds have come a long way since I started working with OEM 10g.  I remember how frustrating it could be if an ETL load impacted the metric values that had to be set for a given IO or CPU load for a database when during business hours, a much lower value would be preferable.  Having to explain to the business why a notification wasn’t sent during the day due to the threshold set for resource usage for night time batch processing often went unaccepted. With EM12c, release 4, we now have Time-based Static thresholds and Adaptive thresholds.  Both are…

SIOUG and HROUG Fall Conferences, 2014!

I’ve just returned from my honeymoon in Venice with the wonderful Tim Gorman, but before we enjoyed our week in this picturesque city, we spent a week doing joint keynotes and two sessions each on our own tech topics at these two incredible conferences in neighboring countries. SIOUG, (Slovenia Oracle User Group) in Ljubljana, Slovenia held their 2014 conference Oct. 13th-14th at the Plaza Hotel.  Tim and I did a joint keynote, “Assumptions, the Death of First Dates and Tech Projects Around the World” which was great fun, as it’s loaded with a number of Pulp Fiction stills that transcends…

    Abstract Review Tips

Yes, this is for my RMOUG abstract reviewers, but it may help other conferences and user groups, too.  We have some incredible content at RMOUG, (Rocky Mtn. Oracle User Group) Training Days conference and its all due to a very highly controlled, thought out process that has evolved over time to ensure that we have an abstract selection process that is as fair as possible and offers new speakers opportunities as well. I’m going to share my abstract scoring summary with the rest of the class to start, so you get an idea of how we score.  As a strong…

    Building a Great Conference Agenda

We are deep into RMOUG’s abstract submissions and reviews, preparing for the following: Oct. 2nd-  Close of Abstract Submissions Oct. 6th-  Close of Abstract Reviews Oct. 10th-  Schedule up for 2015 Training Days With this weighing so heavily on my mind, I felt it might be a good time to put down on paper why I’m so proud of how RMOUG does it’s reviews and why this conference has such a great lineup.  This not only should tell you why you should submit or attend, but if you are considering submitting an abstract, it can help you submit a better…

How to Configure EM12c to NOT Use Load Balancers

This may not come up very often, but for some reason, an administrator might have to reconfigure an EM12c environment to NOT use load balancers. This could be due to: 1.  Hardware Issue on the Load Balancers 2.  Mis-configured Load Balancers 3.  Re-allocation of Load Balancer hardware for other purposes. Whatever the reason may be, I noted that the instructions to set up the load balancers are easy to find, but not so clearly found are how to configure the EM12c environment to not use the load balancers once they’ve been put in place. To revert back to non-load balancer…

    Oracle Open World Schedule

I will be in San Francisco a little early this year and as I’m not longer an ACE Director, it’s to attend the IOUC, (International Oracle User Conference) at Redwood Shores on Sept. 25th and 26th.  I’ll be representing RMOUG for the two day event that has representatives from user groups from all over the world.  Our lovely host, Mary Lou Dopart and her team, will ensure we have another great year learning how we can provide the best user group for our members in the Oracle community. After the a lovely weekend in San Francisco with friends, I’ll be…

EM12c and Windows OS Failover Cluster- Keep it Simple

This is going to be a “KISS”, (Keep it Simple, Silly) post.  I was offered a second Windows cluster to test on when my original one was required for QA.  It was a gracious offer, but I also found out why a cluster should be kept simple and this cluster was anything but simple.  Many times, issues are created and we’ll never see them coming until we go through the pain and the EM12c on this cluster has been both “educational” and painful. The failover cluster is a Windows 2008 server with three Central Access Points, (CAP).  Each CAP has…

Renaming an Oracle Apache Target in EM12c

When installing Enterprise Manager 12c, the host value can come from a number of places for different applications/tiers.  For most, it comes from the environment variable $ORACLE_HOSTNAME, (for Windows Servers, %ORACLE_HOSTNAME%). The OHS1 target, aka Oracle Apache in the middle tier of the EM12c environment pulls it’s value from the etc/hosts file, (for Unix as well as Windows) and so it is vulnerable with a virtual host name or host name change occurs.  It can, however, be updated post installation when the OHS1 target fails to return an active status in the EM12c console. Update the Configuration File The file…

Dealing with Wi-Fi Problems the DBA Kevlar Way

As much as KSCOPE 14 fixed any and all Low-T levels, it couldn’t do anything for our the WiFi problems we were experiencing back in May. I’ve been a telecommuter for almost 4 straight years now and was quite frustrated when our WiFi service became dismal back then. We called Comcast service and worked through trouble-shooting with their support multiple times, only afterward, still unable to download files or watch Netflix into the first three weeks of June.  Tim purchased a new modem after Comcast confirmed our model was at “end of support” and yet, still no improvement.  After more…
