The Amazon Kindle Fire 10 HD Tablet

No, you didn’t get a review of my Samsung Tab S2….I didn’t have it long enough to review it!  Actually, I had it just over six months and yes, it was beautiful and yes, I love it and no, it didn’t survive the fall on the tile, even in the protective cover at Denver International Airport. Needless to say, I love my tablets and I’ve had a number of them.  I’ve had everything from the first 10.1 from Samsung to the iPad Air. My daily work machine is a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, but it’s a beautiful, lovely piece of hardware…

    EM13c- BI Publisher Reports

How much do you know about the big push to BI Publisher reports from Information Publisher reporting in Enterprise Manager 13c?  Be honest now, Pete Sharman is watching…. 🙂 I promise, there won’t be a quiz at the end of this post, but its important for everyone to start recognizing the power behind the new reporting strategy.  Pete was the PM over the big push in EM13c and has a great blog post with numerous resource links, so I’ll leave him to quizzing everyone! IP Reports are incredibly powerful and I don’t see them going away soon, but they have a lot…

    EM13c Corrective Actions

While at Collaborate 2016, a number of us were surprised that people still aren’t using Corrective Actions and in EM13c, there are a number of cool ones built into the system to make your life easier.  In this post, we’ll use the very valuable, Add Tablespace corrective action to ensure the DBA  is no longer woke up at night, automating the tedious task of adding logical space by extending or adding data files. So let’s talk about how you can stop databases from making you get out of bed to add tablespace… 🙂 Creating the Corrective Action Most of this corrective…

    Mentoring

Becoming a mentor was not a direct path for me.  Even though I inspired people with my perseverance and common sense, I had no inclinations for a corner office position, (I often joke about passing up the corner offices in a fight to get to the server room) and this is often a trait that is expected for someone who is titled with “Mentor.” In the five years in an official mentoring capacity, I’ve learned as much as I feel I’ve imparted among those I’ve mentored.  I now find others asking me for advice on how to become a mentor or…

    IOUG Collaborate 2016! #C16LV

It’s that time of year again and the massive undertaking of the Collaborate conference is upon us.  This yearly conference, a collaboration between Quest, Oracle Applications User Group, (OAUG) and Independent Oracle User Group, (IOUG) is one of the largest conferences in the world for those that specialize in all areas of the Oracle database. The conferene is held in different cities, but recently its been sticking to the great destination of Las Vegas, NV.  We’ll be at the Mandalay, which like many casinos, is like it’s own little self-contained city within a city. The week will be crazy and…

Oracle Management Cloud at #IOUG Collaborate 2016

While at Collaborate on Monday, Oracle has been offered a spot to highlight The Oracle Management Cloud.  OMC is a suite of next-generation monitoring and management cloud services designed for heterogeneous environments, all empowered by Oracle’s own cloud!  The first three OMC services (Application Performance Monitoring, Log Analytics and IT Analytics) were launched at OpenWorld 2015.  Both Log Analytics and IT Analytics contain must-have capabilities for DBAs.  This is the only OMC session that will be available at Collaborate and it’s a not to miss session with an all-star cast to present on it.  Manning the slides will be Brian…

EM13c Cloning- Part II, Demands from Test Master and Kellyn

On my previous post, I submitted a job to create a test master database in my test environment.  Now my test environment is a sweet offering of containers that simulate a multi-host scenario, but in reality, it’s not. I noted that after the full copy started, my EMCC partially came down, as did my OMR, requiring both to be logged into and restarted. Upon inspection of TOP on my “host” for my containers, we can see that there is some serious CPU usage from process 80: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 80 root…

How to Find Information in the OMR, (Enterprise Manager Repository)

I get a lot of questions starting with, “Where do I find…” and end with “in the Oracle Management Repository, (OMR)?” The answer to this is one that most DBAs are going to use, as it’s no different than locating objects in most databases, just a few tricks to remember when working with the OMR.  SYSMAN is the main schema owner you’ll be querying in an OMR, (although there are others, like SYSMAN_RO and others.) Most views you will be engaging with when querying the OMR start with MGMT or MGMT$. DBA_TAB_COLUMNS is your friend. Know the power of _GUID…

Best Practices with Enterprise Manager 13c

Since the introduction of Enterprise Manager 12c, folks have been asking for a list of best practices.  I know a lot of you have been waiting for this post! 1.Use previously deployed, older hardware for your Enterprise Manager deployment on 13c. Enterprise Manager is a simple, single service system.  There is no need for adequate resources and ability to scale.  In fact, I’ll soon be posting on my blog about building an EM13c on a Raspberry Pi 3. 2. Please feel free to add new schemas, objects and ETL’s to the Oracle Management Repository, (OMR.) This database doesn’t have enough…

    Gold Agent Image

The Gold Agent Image is going to simplify agent management in EM13c, something a lot of folks are going to appreciate. First step to using this new feature is to create a image to be used as your gold agent standard.  This should be the agent that is the newest, most up to date and patched agent that you would like your other agents to match. Managing Gold Images You can access this feature via your cloud control console from the Setup menu, Manage Cloud Control, Gold Agent Images. If it’s the first time you’re accessing this, you’ll want to…

Girls Develop It Weekend Adventures- Intro to Javascript

Even though I didn’t have the “official” prerequisite classes of HTML and CSS for the JavaScript class offered by sister Meetup group, Girls Develop it, I decided on Friday that I wanted to take the weekend class and signed up. The class is held at the Turing Development school and it was a great downtown location.  Very centralized, no matter if you’re North, South, East or West of the city and the venue is a school, so it’s set up with plenty of power, WiFi and projector with multiple screens.  It had started another spring time snow, so I was…

AWR Warehouse Fails on Upload- No New Snapshots

This issue can be seen in either EM12c or EM13c AWR Warehouse environments.  It occurs when there is a outage on the AWR Warehouse and/or the source database that is to upload to it. The first indication of the problem, is when databases appear to not have uploaded once the environments are back up and running. The best way to see an upload, from beginning to end is to highlight the database you want to load manually, (click in the center of the row, if you click on the database name, you’ll be taken from the AWR Warehouse to the…

Adding a Database to the Raspberry Pi Zero

This morning, after someone added SQL Developer to a Raspberry Pi 3, Jeff Smith pinged me and the question was posed, as it often is, can you run Oracle database server on a Raspberry Pi, (RPI)? The answer is no, you can’t, as there are no binaries for the ARM processor platform that you can compile, so its nothing to do with power, (although it is low powered for a very good reason…) but really due to the processor type.  Hopefully that’ll stop those of you building out massive RPI clusters in hopes of creating their own home servers with…

Retaining Previous Agent Images, the Why and the How

I appreciate killing two birds with one stone.  I’m all about efficiency and if I can satisfy more than one task with a simple, productive process, then I’m going to do it.  Today, I’m about to: Show you why you should have a backup copy of previous agent software and how to do this. Create a documented process to restore previous images of an agent to a target host. Create the content section for the Collaborate HOL on Gold Images and make it reproducible. Create a customer demonstration of Gold Agent Image AND publish a blog post on how to…

Adding GPIO Pins to the Raspberry Pi Zero

Although the Raspberry Pi 3 is now available, many people are still interested in it’s cheaper, smaller version, the Raspberry Pi Zero.  This version isn’t just smaller, it also requires a Wi-Fi dongle for internet access, (one of the new, great features on the 3 Model!) and one of my main reasons for not recommending it to newbies to the Raspberry Pi, (RPI) world, is that it doesn’t come with the GPIO pins pre-soldered. GPIO, The In and Out to the World GPIO, which stands for General Purpose Input and Output is an excellent feature on this single board computer, allowing…

RMOUG’s Movie Night and WIT Panel

Last night I attended our RMOUG WIT’s movie night.  We partnered with Regis and the choice in movie has received a lot of great reviews, titled, Code-  Debugging the Gender Gap.  The movie resonated with me profoundly, as I was able to connect with not just the women involved in the interviews, but the girls who reminded me of myself when I was young. There were a number of initiatives that made me proud to be part of the IT industry and opportunities still needing our contribution towards change. Once the movie was over, we held a short WIT panel session.…

Creating and Verify RSA SSH Keys

As we migrate to the cloud, secured credentials are starting to become a standard in most DBAs worlds.  If you don’t take the time to understand ssh keys and secured credentials, well, you’re not going to get very far in the cloud. Now ssh keys are a way to authenticate to a host without the need for a password.  Its far more secure, but takes a little time to set up and comprehension between public and private keys, along with the impact of pass phrases. Private keys shouldn’t be shared, as anyone with access to the private key can generate…

Hybrid Gateways and the Oracle Public Cloud with EM13c

This is going to be a multi-post series, (I have so many of those going, you’d hope I’d finish one vs. going onto another one and coming back to others, but that’s just how I roll…:)) As I now have access to the Oracle Public Cloud, (OPC) I’m going to start by building out some connectivity to one of my on premise Enterprise Manager 13c environments.  I had some difficulty getting this done, which may sounds strange for someone who’s done projects with EM12c and DBaaS. Its not THAT hard to do, it’s just locating the proper steps when there…
