Extensive Elapsed Time for ASH Report

The other day I had a customer who was to send me an ASH report after there was a challenge in providing me EM Diagnostics from their repository database.  After the report hadn’t been submitted after a number of days, the customer admitted that they would execute an ASH report request and would subsequently kill the session after eight hours or so of non-completion. Although I hadn’t experienced this myself, there are a number of causes behind an ASH report not running and troubleshooting it is a straight forward approach. Analysis The first thing to do, is to gather some…

EM13c DBaaS, Part 2, Thin Clone Issues

I’ve been working on a test environment consisting of multiple containers in a really cool little setup.  The folks that built it create the grand tours for Oracle and were hoping I’d really kick the tires on it, as its a new setup and I’m known for doing major damage to resource consumption… 🙂  No fear, it didn’t take too long before I ran into an interesting scenario that we’ll call the “Part 2” of my Snap clone posts. Environment after Kellyn has kicked the tires. In EM13c, if you run into errors, you need to know how to start…

HotSos Symposium and IOUG Collaborate 2016

I fly out on Sunday for HotSos and am looking forward to giving a joint keynote with Jeff Smith, as well as giving two brand new sessions on Enterprise Manager New Features.  IOUG’s Collaborate is just a month afterwards, so the spring conference chaos is officially under way. With running the RMOUG conference, Feb. 9th-11th, I think you can imagine what my response was like when I realized how much content I had to produce for HotSos’ two sessions and then another four for Collaborate, plus a Hands on Lab. As focused as I’ve been on day job demands for…

EM13c DBaaS, Part 1 On-Premise and the Test Master

With EM13c, DBaaS has never been easier.  No matter if you’re solution is on-premise, hybrid, (on-premise to the cloud and back) or all cloud, you’ll find that the ability to take on DevOps challenges and ease the demands on you as the DBA is viewed as the source of much of the contention. On-Premise Cloning In EM13c, on- premise clones have been built in by default and easier to manage than they were before.  The one pre-requisite I’ll ask of you is that you set up your database and host preferred credentials for the location you’ll be creating any databases…

    AWR Warehouse Jobs in EM13c

As I’m playing with the AWR Warehouse in EM13c, I noticed a few changes that may send up a red flag and wanted to assist in removing those.  As many know, the AWR Warehouse is very dependent upon EM Jobs…even more so now that we’ve moved to EM13c.  The EM Job System has gone through quite an overhaul, so let’s go through how this may impact what you’re common to seeing when adding a database to the AWR Warehouse. Discovery After adding a database to the AWR Warehouse in EM13c, you’ll note within just a few minutes, the database will…

    Enterprise Manager 13c, System Broadcast

I thought this was kind of a cool feature- the ability to send a message to appear to specific or all users in the Cloud Control Console.  I have to admit that I used to like a similar feature in Microsoft/MSSQL to send network broadcast messages to desktops that offered one more way to get information to users that they might be less inclined to miss. Anyone who’s already deployed/upgraded to Enterprise Manager 13c and wanted to search how to use this feature, it’s not well documented, so I’m going to blog about it and hopefully that will assist those that would like to put…

Enterprise Manager 13c, “Webtier Could Not Be Started”

Let’s say you’re on call and you’re woke from a deep, delightful sleep from the pager, stating the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control isn’t available. You log into the host, check the status, it tells you that the Weblogic server is up and everything else is down.  The host logs show that the servers were restarted unexpectedly, so you want a clean shutdown before bringing Enterprise Manager back up, so you shut it down and then attempt to start it clean: $ ./emctl start oms Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13c Release 1 Copyright (c) 1996, 2015 Oracle Corporation. The New Smartphone Upgrade

I’ve been feeling quite amorous about the camera features on my Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge phone, but noticed that it wasn’t taking as automatically impressive pictures as usual and sometimes, I even had to focus, (the horror!) I turned the camera over and could see a hairline crack inside the camera lens.  It was a really odd place to have damage, as the exterior cover to the lens was fine.  The camera is incredibly good, as even can be seen here in a picture that had the quality sucked out of it on Facebook from our trip to Mexico a month…

The Ten Rules of Database Administration

I’m a Leaf on the Wind, Watch How I Soar. This is one of my favorite lines from the movie Serenity. Without Alan Tudyk’s character dying and all at the end of this, (sorry if I ruined the movie for anyone…) this is how a DBA should be in the database environment-  skilled, reliable and maybe a little off our rockers. Our job is to protect the data, the database and all of the database. With that said, I’m going to list my Ten Rules of Database Administration. Fixing a performance problem with hardware is the best way to guarantee the return…

Displaying CPU Graphs For Different Time Ranges in Enterprise Manager

This question was posted in Twitter from @matvarsh30, who asked, “How can I display CPU usage over different periods of time for databases in Enterprise Manager?” Everyone loves their trusty Top Activity, but the product’s functionality is limited when it comes to custom views and this is what our user had run into. There are numerous ways to display this data, but I’m going to focus on one of my favorite features in the product that was created to replace Top Activity, ASH Analytics. Retaining AWR Data for ASH Analtyics Note: This process to display CPU graphs will work for…

Management Packs, Restricted Use Licenses and the Enterprise Manager

There was a question posted on Oracle-l forum today that should have a blog post for easy lookup for folks.  Regarding your Enterprise Manager repository database, (aka OMR.)   This database has a restricted use license, which means you can use it for the Enterprise Manager repository, but you can’t add partitioning to it or RAC or dataguard features without licensing those features.  You also can’t use the diagnostic and tuning pack features available in Enterprise Manager on the repository database without licensing it outside of the EMDiagnostics tool.  You can view information about the license that is part of…

    Another RMOUG Training Days Success!

I’ve just returned from another post-RMOUG conference mountain trip and happy to say that another RMOUG Training Days conference has successfully completed.  It’s a massive undertaking that takes an incredible amount of time from our board of directors, volunteers and Team YCC, our conference support company.  In the end, it’s all worth it and no one regrets the loss in personal life or family time to put on the largest Oracle regional user conference in the US. As my fourth year as conference director completes, I can look back and see how the conference has changed, how we’ve successfully taken…

    EM13c Upgrade Tips- Part II

There is a flurry of excitement about Enterprise Manager 13c and I’m blown away by how many customers are looking not just to install and test out the new release, but have plans already underway to upgrade to it.  At Oracle, we’re covering a lot of information that will help make that upgrade easier and I want to make sure I share what we learn with the public so you can be as cool about upgrades as we are. Importance of Network to the Cloud

I’ve been discussing for years about the importance of network to database performance, especially once I started working on VLDBs, (Very Large Databases) but its a topic that often is disregarded.  Now that I’m working more and more in the cloud, it’s become more evident the importance of the network to our survival. For each and every cloud project I’ve been involved in, there is evidently going to be multiple challenges that turn to the network administrator for a solution.  I don’t blame the administrator in any way when he becomes exasperated by our requests.  As it is my solemn…

Raspberry Pi Version 2 Wifi Inconsistent Connectivity

I’d had some difficulty with WiFi consistently staying connected on each of my Raspberry Pi units.  I’d had a little time to look into it, but no research had offered an answer and the only fixes I’d come up with was a shell script I wrote to force a restart of the NIC, which helped some, but no improvement when I added an antenna, (I considered all the wires, sensors, etc. might be interfering with the signal.) Finally this weekend, started to dig around and noted that although in the user interface, it showed both connections to my home WiFi and…

Adding Targets in Enterprise Manager 13c

The only thing that is constant is change. There were some major changes to Enterprise Manager with 13c and many of them may seem small to someone who knows the product well, but then again, it may trip you up as you’re accustomed to features working as you knew them in EM12c.  One of these features is the manual edition of targets through the guided process. Adding a Target  The Setup menu is still on the right, it just has some company now in the new EM13c interface: Click on Setup, Add Target, Add Targets Manually. This is where the…

Installing a New Enterprise Manager 13c Environment

As I patiently wait for approvals to post my Oracle Management Cloud blog posts, I thought I would just post on Enterprise Manager 13c and answer questions that have been posed to me via email and comments. Is there anything new I need to watch for as I install EM13c? Your management repository database should be a single-tenant 12.1.0.2 database.
