Create an Oracle VM on Azure in Less than 5 Minutes

If there’s one thing I’ve been able to prove this week, it’s that even with the sweet 4G LTE, Wi-Fi setup in my RV, Montana still has the worst Wi-Fi coverage in the US.  Lucky for me, I work in the cloud and automate everything, because if there’s one thing I love about automating with scripts, is that I can build out a deployment faster and less resource intensive than anyone can from the portal. Oracle Virtual Machines in Azure When you build out an Azure VM, with Oracle, you’ll also need to have the supporting structure and a sufficiently…

Best Practices for Oracle Data Guard on Azure

I keep saying I’m going to start sharing what I’m doing in the Analytics space soon, but heck, there’s too much I need to keep adding to on the Oracle in Azure arena! So, as most people know, I’m not a big fan of Oracle RAC, (Real Application Cluster).  My opinion was that it was often sold for use cases that it doesn’t serve, (such as HA) and the resource demands between the nodes, as well as what happens when a node is evicted to those that are left are not in the best interest for most use cases.  On…

    Oracle and Microsoft’s Cross-Cloud Partnership

A couple weeks back, Oracle and Microsoft announced their cross-cloud partnership.  This was wonderful news to me, as I’ve been working on numerous Oracle projects at Microsoft with Azure. The Gist To know that there is now a partnership between the two clouds and that there’s also a large amount of documentation about working between the two clouds is very helpful vs. the amount I’ve been working on based off just my knowledge.  Just as anyone appreciates a second set of eyes, I now have two company’s worth! If you missed the announcement and curious what it’s about, Oracle has…

    Migrating Oracle Databases to Azure

Cloud is a still a huge buzz word because people are still moving to embrace it. As many companies that are in the cloud, there are still a large percentage of real estate that’s on-premises. As much as I’m now Analytics and AI with Azure, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I’ve been adopted by a number of those inside Microsoft to assist in the migration of Oracle databases to Azure. There are three primary goals: Move to the cloud and Azure is their cloud choice, so they plan on staying with the Oracle database platform. Migrate current Oracle databases to…

    Time for #GLOC, #SQLSatDallas, #DataSummit18

The next nine days, I’m traveling to three cities for four events. We’ll just call this the 9-3-4 gauntlet of speaker life. I booked this travel as four, one-way flights to get the itinerary I needed to make the most of my schedule and will have breaks between each event to make sure I don’t kill myself my last two weeks at Delphix. GLOC Today I’m heading to the Great Lakes Oracle Conference, (https://gloc.neooug.org/) where I get to present on DevOps and hang out with all my Oracle peeps. GLOC is the second largest regional Oracle user group event and…

    StarEast, InteropITX and GDPR

I’m getting ready to get on a plane between two events today and have been so busy, that there’s been a break in blogging.  That’s right folks, Kellyn has let a few things slide…. For those people on top of all the happenings in Kevlar’s life, I’ve been busy removing 15 years of possessions from my home so we can sell it in the next month, along with the purchase, upgrade and consolidation into a 42Ft. travel trailer.  It’s quite an undertaking, so a few things have had to be put lower on the priority list to complete the rest.…

GDPR Solutions in the Day of Automation

There’s something for having job security and many of the solutions that I see offered for RDBMS challenges offer just that. With compliance with EU’s GDPR, (General Data Protection Regulations) just around the corner, (mark you calendar, May 25, 2018) you’d think we’d all be scrambling for a simpler solution to discovering and addressing all that GDPR data. Quick refresher for those of you going, “What is GDPR?” Data security is a known focus of GDPR when you talk to folks, but it’s much more than just security.  It’s about extended rights of the individual in the EU. There’s four…

RMOUG Training Days 2018, Day 2

So I survived the first day of RMOUG Training Day’s workshops, sessions and the VIP Reception ran a little later last night than we originally planned.  I had to present in the first session of the day at 8:30am, so I was a little worse for wear when I checked into my room for DevOps for the DBA. I really appreciate all the attendees that came to the session, the great questions and feedback I received.  Its not easy to pay attention to a speaker that early in the morning! Penny Avril gave us an excellent keynote, describing where Oracle…

    GDPR ‘Murica!

Just over a year ago, an alarm of emails, posts and projects arose in Europe surrounding the General Data Protection Regulation, also known with the acronym, GDPR.  It was as if someone had poked the sleeping bear of IT and woke it and boy, was it grumpy. Suddenly EU technologists were learning all about advanced system security, how to encrypt and mask data, multi-tier authentication, along with creating procedures when a user requested to be forgotten.  Projects and money were being allocated to take on this demand that considering its initiative was passed back in 2014, you’d think would have…

East Coast Oracle Conference, (ECO 17)

So this week I’m back on the other coast, Raleigh, NC at ECO17 after last week in Seattle. I’ve switched from SQL Server to Oracle and we won’t discuss how many times I had to correct myself as I said, “transaction log” instead of “archive log” and pointed west instead of east for the ocean…My expression at times was similar to Obi Wan’s- For the next month, I’ll be sticking to the Oracle side, as this is going to be a crazy month for travel.  My two sessions at ECO this week were well attended and I really enjoyed talking…

Pass Summit 2017, 2nd Day, Thursday

Thursday started out calm, self-assured that I knew where I needed to be all day and was prepared.  I tweeted happily that I had found a lovely spot to work during the keynote, (day job!) Yeah, this: At the keynote, there was a table with my name on it where I was supposed to be.  Thank you so much to Brent Ozar for letting me know so I could apologize for the miscommunication with the organizers of the blogger table, (which is not the same thing as the blogger meetup-  oops!!) The rest of the day was crazy busy, but…

Upgrading an Amazon EC2 Delphix Source, Part III

This is the Part III in a four part series on how to:  Enable VNC Viewer access on Amazon EC2 hosts.  Install DB12c and upgrade a Dsource for Delphix from 11g to 12c, (12.1)  Update the Delphix Configuration to point to the newly upgraded 12c database and the new Oracle 12c home.  Install DB12c and upgrade target VDBs for Delphix residing on AWS to 12.1 from the newly upgraded source. In Part II, we finished upgrading the Dsource database, but now we need to get it configured on the Delphix side. Log into the Delphix Admin console to make the…

Upgrading an Amazon EC2 Delphix Source, Part II

I’m finally getting back to upgrading the Linux Source for a POC I’m doing with some folks and picking up from where we left off in Part I… Address Display Issue Now that we have our VNC Viewer working on our Amazon host, the first thing we’ll try is to run the Oracle installer, (unzipped location –> database –> runInstaller) but it’s going to fail because we’re missing the xdpinfo file.  To verify this, you’ll need to open up a terminal from Application –> System Tools –> Terminal: $ ls -l /usr/bin/xdpyinfo ls: /usr/bin/xdpyinfo: No such file or directory We’ll…

Upgrading an Amazon EC2 Delphix Source, Part I

For a POC that I’m working on with the DBVisit guys, I needed a quick, 12c environment to work on and have at our disposal as required.  I knew I could build out an 11g one in about 10 minutes with our trust free trial, but would then need to upgrade it to 12c. Disable snapshots to Delphix Engine This is a simple prerequisite before you upgrade an Oracle source database and takes down the pressure on the system, as well as confusion as the database upgrades the Oracle home, etc. Simply log into the Delphix Admin console, click on…

    My Summer of SQL

I know that right sidebar on my blog has an AWFUL lot of Microsoft events on it.  There’s so many, I’ve begun to use the hashtag #MySummerOfSQL due to it.  For those of you that follow me with Oracle, it doesn’t mean that I’m leaving the Oracle community- not even close.  I’m as dedicated as ever to Oracle and hope to dig back into my performance roots on both platforms, but know that the summer is the quiet time for Oracle user group events, so I’ll be keeping myself busy with SQL Saturdays and the AWESOME preview to the annual…

Conference Networking- Tips to Doing it Right

I was in a COE, (Center of Excellence) meeting yesterday and someone asked me, “Kellyn, is your blog correct?  Are you really speaking at a Blockchain event??”  Yeah, I’m all over the technical map these days and you know what? I love the variety of technology, the diversity of attendance and the differences in how the conferences are managed.  Now that last one might seem odd and you might think that they’d all be similar, but its surprising how different they really are. Getting to Know You Today I’m going to talk about an aspect of conferences that’s very near to my heart,…

Oracle IOTs against SQL Server Clustered Indexes

I’m itching to dig more into the SQL Server 2016 optimizer enhancements, but I’m going to complete my comparison of indices between the two platforms before I get myself into further trouble with my favorite area of database technology. <–This is sooo me. Index Organized Tables Index Organized Tables, (IOT) are just another variation of a primary b-tree index, but unlike a standard table with an index simply enforcing uniqueness, the index IS the table.  The data is arranged in order to improve performance and in a clustered primary key state. This is the closest to a clustered index in SQL…

    Indexing in Oracle, Fragmentation

I just uploaded my slides from Collaborate 2017 to Slideshare, but also, the findings missing from my slide deck I used for Oak Table World on War of the Indices- Oracle and SQL Server.  Feel free to download them here. As I tested out Oracle vs. SQL Server Index performance, I ran across this great script to check for fragmentation from Franck Pachot.  You’ll need to simply update the script to declare the table and index name or simply edit the script as is, adding those two values correctly before running it. The outcome when run against my ugly index…
