    Lady Coders Conference, Denver 2017

This weekend I’m not going to have to say, “No, this is not my husband’s code” for a change. This weekend will be about supporting everyone in technology and how technology will benefit by making everyone part of tech. This event is the brain child of my peer, Elaine Marino, owner of Equili.  Equili’s mission is to “To build a stronger, more diverse tech community that levels the playing field for all underrepresented and underutilized groups in technology.” This event experienced some challenges as planning got underway and it’s not surprised. Considering the little investment that females founders receive, it’s…

DMV for Log Statistics in SQL Server

There aren’t too many changes to the Dynamic Management Views in SQL Server 2017, but one was mentioned that I worth a second look and often have a lot more going on than upon first look. Gif Credit: ancsy55.tumbr.com DM_DB_LOG_STATS This is an addition to SQL Server 2017 and available in Azure Database/Azure Data Warehouse to simplify and synchronize how we query information about log statistics, not just backups.  The added benefit of this is that it only requires the VIEW DATABASE STATE privilege to utilize it, which eases the demand on anyone who’s tried to grant rights to view…

GDPR Solutions in the Day of Automation

There’s something for having job security and many of the solutions that I see offered for RDBMS challenges offer just that. With compliance with EU’s GDPR, (General Data Protection Regulations) just around the corner, (mark you calendar, May 25, 2018) you’d think we’d all be scrambling for a simpler solution to discovering and addressing all that GDPR data. Quick refresher for those of you going, “What is GDPR?” Data security is a known focus of GDPR when you talk to folks, but it’s much more than just security.  It’s about extended rights of the individual in the EU. There’s four…

Where in the World Has Goth Geek Girl Been

I’m on track to fly home tomorrow, March 11th after nine days and three events.  I’m pretty exhausted and just ready to go home and catch up on some sleep…:) I started out last weekend in Victoria BC and was thrilled to be on this emerald island of the Pacific Northwest.  British Columbia is gorgeous as it is, but Victoria is a special place that quickly became one of my favorite places in the world. The Victoria event was an inaugural one and well attended.  SQL Saturday Victoria was an event that Delphix sponsored and my peer, Serge, did an…

    Can You DIG It?

As I dig deeper into Linux for the SQL Server DBAs and for Oracle HotSos, I’m digging into DIG.  Yeah, I went there with that first sentence…. What is DIG? DIG stands for Domain Information Groper, (no, not that kind of groper…)  and it’s an important part of deeper Linux learning for all database technologists.  You can’t connect to data if you don’t know how to get from point A to point B and DIG is the utility to help you gather information surrounding DNS.  DIG allows the user to gather deep information using both command line arguments and batch…

Scene and Cut. Training Days 2018

I’m recovering after a very successful RMOUG Training Days 2018 and now looking towards the next year.  The board elections come up in two months and I’m happy to say, that the goals that I hoped to achieve in my year as president, the board was able to achieve even as I worked on the conference and started as the president for the SQL Server User Group here in Denver, all in parallel. The primary leadership for the user group was becoming aware of what most Oracle user groups are facing-  our user groups are getting older, (2018 was the…

RMOUG Training Days 2018, Day 2

So I survived the first day of RMOUG Training Day’s workshops, sessions and the VIP Reception ran a little later last night than we originally planned.  I had to present in the first session of the day at 8:30am, so I was a little worse for wear when I checked into my room for DevOps for the DBA. I really appreciate all the attendees that came to the session, the great questions and feedback I received.  Its not easy to pay attention to a speaker that early in the morning! Penny Avril gave us an excellent keynote, describing where Oracle…

    RMOUG, Feb. 20th, 2018 #td18

So its the first day of RMOUG Training Days 2018 in Westminster, CO, (just NW of Denver, between Denver and Boulder) and we’re enjoying the winter weather after spring temperatures on Sunday, which dropped almost 50F degrees in a single day.  The change in temperatures was accompanied by about 8 inches of snow for Denver and most of those in summer gear were faced with only one choice…. Actually they were left with two-  They *could* go for a swim in the snow or they could register for the workshops at RMOUG Training Days, braving the roads, (which due to…

    SQL Server Operations Studio

Since I reformatted my Surface Pro 4 so I could have my Docker running again, I also needed to recover my local SQL Server instance I like to have available on my PC. This was a perfect time to get everything up and running, but instead of my standard way of doing this, use SQL Server Operations Studio, (SSOS). The Lesson Most SQL Server DBAs have a GUI took to assist in managing their database environment and unlike Oracle DBAs, (at least before multi-tenant and the cloud) it was common for SQL Server DBAs, (on average) to have considerably more…

Docker and Windows 10 1709 Patch, The End

So if you read my last post on my challenges with Docker containers running on Windows 10 after the 1709 patch, I thought I was close to solving it once I was granted the admin password to disable and uninstall Sophos Endpoint. Once I uninstalled Sophos, I noted I ended up with a different line number error.  The question was, has the problem shifted from Sophos to a new issue or is it more complex than just the one application?  We’d already seen that it was complicated, including the Hyper-V with the 1709 patch that was part of the problem.…

Docker and Windows 10 with 1709 Patch aka Killing Me Slowly

So I transitioned in the last years from having a development lab, to VMs, to the cloud and now, tired of slow WiFi, been happily using Docker for most of my demos.  As of January, the latest upgrade to Windows 10, aka patch version 109, has been like a bad cat fight. For anyone else using Docker on Windows, it’s very likely that the error “MobyLinuxVM failed to start worker process” is a bane of your existence.  After exhausting the standard attempt to uninstall whatever patches were applied by Microsoft, and post researching a solution, you’d discover its more of a…

    RMOUG Training Days 2018

So Training Days is coming up in two weeks.  You haven’t registered to attend?  How you feeling about that? Rocky Mountain Oracle User Group, (RMOUG) has the largest Oracle user group grassroots conference each February.  For the 2018 year, we decided to shake it up with: A new venue, The Westminster Westin Conference Center A new management company, EPS Conference Management A new Training Days Director, Komal Goyal A new management software, Bizabo This was a huge undertaking and I have to say, I was worried we wouldn’t be able to pull it off, but it was time.  There’s nothing…

Where in the World is Goth Girl- Cleveland Edition

I’ve returned from SQL Saturday Cleveland after presenting “Linux Performance Essentials for the SQL Server DBA”.  The event had 30% women speakers, which is incredible for a technical event.  I’m thrilled with the attendance and although my session went through a lot of Linux in an hour, people didn’t leave looking like their brains were going to explode, so mission accomplished. I always feel like I’m walking around these events looking for the hidden cameras trying to record my astounded facial reactions. There is a significantly higher percentage of women speaking and in attendance and not a pencil skirt in…

    Have Dog, Will Travel

So I went on a business trip to visit my company headquarters this last week and I took my dog with me.  Yes, you heard that right, my dog. My 10lb Chihuahua/Basenji mix dog, Esme, is actually a service dog, which means she can go almost anywhere with me.  She’s gone through a good amount of training to do so and honestly, she travels better than most adults.  Although she’s had all the training, the fact can’t be ignored that she was a severely abused puppy and still suffers some residual effects of this.  The task she performs is at…

Linux for the SQL Server DBA, Part III

Yes, there’s a Part III! You’re going to have to start scripting and now that you know a few VI/VIM commands, lets talk beginning scripting with shell. In our example below, we’re going to start a new project called “test”.  For this, the requirements are: create a new folder off of the /u01/scripts directory create a new file called test.sh inside the testdir directory ensure it uses bash as our chosen shell # cd /u01/scripts # mkdir testdir # cd testdir # touch test.sh # ls test.sh # pwd /u01/scripts/testdir As you can see, I’ve now fulfilled the first two…

Why SQL Server Shouldn’t Run as Root on Linux

So more than one person contacted me about my last post and stated that they didn’t see a problem with SQL Server on Linux running as the root user. Me: Although enhancements have changed Windows installations for applications to run with a unique user, I created a mssql OS user even back on SQL Server 2000 on Windows as I had a tendency to use similar security practices for all database platforms as a multi-platform DBA.  With that being said-  yes, it introduced complexity, but it was for a reason: users should be restricted to the least amount of privileges…

Linux 101 for SQL Server DBAs, Part II

Linux has become a clear area of required learning for SQL Server DBAs in as of SQL Server 2016.  What?  You didn’t read that right, you say?  Yes, while a Linux edition was introduced in SQL Server 2016, it was pushed to the forefront with the release of 2017, along with Python in a push towards stronger DevOps initiatives, (one OS to rule them all!) and Python to assist with even stronger analytics trends. As most database platforms already run on Linux, the SQL Server community has a bit of catch up to do, so as many advanced DBA linux…

    GDPR ‘Murica!

Just over a year ago, an alarm of emails, posts and projects arose in Europe surrounding the General Data Protection Regulation, also known with the acronym, GDPR.  It was as if someone had poked the sleeping bear of IT and woke it and boy, was it grumpy. Suddenly EU technologists were learning all about advanced system security, how to encrypt and mask data, multi-tier authentication, along with creating procedures when a user requested to be forgotten.  Projects and money were being allocated to take on this demand that considering its initiative was passed back in 2014, you’d think would have…
