So I’ve finally crawled my way back out of the hole I dug myself in this last month. The house is empty, the 5th wheel is ready for us to move into and I’m now in Redmond, doing my NEO, (New Employee Orientation.) I swear this is all I see in my head every time I hear “NEO” 🙂 D&I Epiphany The first epiphany is that Microsoft, unlike most companies, is really walking the walk when it comes to diversity. The percentage of women and people of color is by far, the largest I’ve ever seen at an on boarding…

So many have asked me when I’m starting at Microsoft and the official date is Monday, June 11th now. Many also wonder what my upper limits are on how much I can handle, well folks, it looks like we’ve reached them! I was supposed to start this last Monday, but as my last day approached, it became all the more clear that there was a need to change my ending and start date. Individual deadlines had pushed out, requirements changed and I was left feeling a bit overwhelmed because as most know, I don’t do anything the easy way- major…

How many updated policies for use of personal data did you sign off the last couple days? As I had observed the EU procrastinating on their compliance for General Data Protection Regulations, (GDPR) until December of 2016, (it went into effect in April, 2014 with a deadline in the EU of December, 2016) I wasn’t surprised that we’re seeing a flurry of requests to sign off on data usage this week. The deadline is tomorrow, May 25th for non-EU and as expected, here we are. I’ve been talking about GDPR for over two years now and I’m far from the…

The next nine days, I’m traveling to three cities for four events. We’ll just call this the 9-3-4 gauntlet of speaker life. I booked this travel as four, one-way flights to get the itinerary I needed to make the most of my schedule and will have breaks between each event to make sure I don’t kill myself my last two weeks at Delphix. GLOC Today I’m heading to the Great Lakes Oracle Conference, (https://gloc.neooug.org/) where I get to present on DevOps and hang out with all my Oracle peeps. GLOC is the second largest regional Oracle user group event and…

The only thing that stays the same is change…. As the time flies by and the world turns, I often am jarred back to reality when I discover how the little things we do can have a larger impact on the world around us. Flying back from Interop ITX and StarEast conferences last week, I was reminded of this. While reading the latest copy of Wired , I came across a story on D-Tech High School. This is the school that resides on the Oracle headquarters campus, in its own building(s). The story was interviewing different students to discuss how…

I spent this week speaking at two conferences that may not be familiar to my usual crowd: • Techwell StarEast Testing Conference in Orlando, FL • Interop ITX Data Conference in Las Vegas, NV StarEast Testing Conference Techwell’s event is attended by testers and had over 2000 attendees at the Hyatt Regency Orlando’s Convention Center. This is a huge convention center and I won’t lie- I did try to first register at the Mazda event and then the KPMG event. One of the attendees in my session admitted she was crashing my talk from the KPMG conference and I was pretty…

I’m getting ready to get on a plane between two events today and have been so busy, that there’s been a break in blogging. That’s right folks, Kellyn has let a few things slide…. For those people on top of all the happenings in Kevlar’s life, I’ve been busy removing 15 years of possessions from my home so we can sell it in the next month, along with the purchase, upgrade and consolidation into a 42Ft. travel trailer. It’s quite an undertaking, so a few things have had to be put lower on the priority list to complete the rest.…

This weekend I’m not going to have to say, “No, this is not my husband’s code” for a change. This weekend will be about supporting everyone in technology and how technology will benefit by making everyone part of tech. This event is the brain child of my peer, Elaine Marino, owner of Equili. Equili’s mission is to “To build a stronger, more diverse tech community that levels the playing field for all underrepresented and underutilized groups in technology.” This event experienced some challenges as planning got underway and it’s not surprised. Considering the little investment that females founders receive, it’s…

There aren’t too many changes to the Dynamic Management Views in SQL Server 2017, but one was mentioned that I worth a second look and often have a lot more going on than upon first look. Gif Credit: ancsy55.tumbr.com DM_DB_LOG_STATS This is an addition to SQL Server 2017 and available in Azure Database/Azure Data Warehouse to simplify and synchronize how we query information about log statistics, not just backups. The added benefit of this is that it only requires the VIEW DATABASE STATE privilege to utilize it, which eases the demand on anyone who’s tried to grant rights to view…

There’s something for having job security and many of the solutions that I see offered for RDBMS challenges offer just that. With compliance with EU’s GDPR, (General Data Protection Regulations) just around the corner, (mark you calendar, May 25, 2018) you’d think we’d all be scrambling for a simpler solution to discovering and addressing all that GDPR data. Quick refresher for those of you going, “What is GDPR?” Data security is a known focus of GDPR when you talk to folks, but it’s much more than just security. It’s about extended rights of the individual in the EU. There’s four…

I’m on track to fly home tomorrow, March 11th after nine days and three events. I’m pretty exhausted and just ready to go home and catch up on some sleep…:) I started out last weekend in Victoria BC and was thrilled to be on this emerald island of the Pacific Northwest. British Columbia is gorgeous as it is, but Victoria is a special place that quickly became one of my favorite places in the world. The Victoria event was an inaugural one and well attended. SQL Saturday Victoria was an event that Delphix sponsored and my peer, Serge, did an…

As I dig deeper into Linux for the SQL Server DBAs and for Oracle HotSos, I’m digging into DIG. Yeah, I went there with that first sentence…. What is DIG? DIG stands for Domain Information Groper, (no, not that kind of groper…) and it’s an important part of deeper Linux learning for all database technologists. You can’t connect to data if you don’t know how to get from point A to point B and DIG is the utility to help you gather information surrounding DNS. DIG allows the user to gather deep information using both command line arguments and batch…

I’m recovering after a very successful RMOUG Training Days 2018 and now looking towards the next year. The board elections come up in two months and I’m happy to say, that the goals that I hoped to achieve in my year as president, the board was able to achieve even as I worked on the conference and started as the president for the SQL Server User Group here in Denver, all in parallel. The primary leadership for the user group was becoming aware of what most Oracle user groups are facing- our user groups are getting older, (2018 was the…

So I survived the first day of RMOUG Training Day’s workshops, sessions and the VIP Reception ran a little later last night than we originally planned. I had to present in the first session of the day at 8:30am, so I was a little worse for wear when I checked into my room for DevOps for the DBA. I really appreciate all the attendees that came to the session, the great questions and feedback I received. Its not easy to pay attention to a speaker that early in the morning! Penny Avril gave us an excellent keynote, describing where Oracle…

So its the first day of RMOUG Training Days 2018 in Westminster, CO, (just NW of Denver, between Denver and Boulder) and we’re enjoying the winter weather after spring temperatures on Sunday, which dropped almost 50F degrees in a single day. The change in temperatures was accompanied by about 8 inches of snow for Denver and most of those in summer gear were faced with only one choice…. Actually they were left with two- They *could* go for a swim in the snow or they could register for the workshops at RMOUG Training Days, braving the roads, (which due to…

Since I reformatted my Surface Pro 4 so I could have my Docker running again, I also needed to recover my local SQL Server instance I like to have available on my PC. This was a perfect time to get everything up and running, but instead of my standard way of doing this, use SQL Server Operations Studio, (SSOS). The Lesson Most SQL Server DBAs have a GUI took to assist in managing their database environment and unlike Oracle DBAs, (at least before multi-tenant and the cloud) it was common for SQL Server DBAs, (on average) to have considerably more…

So if you read my last post on my challenges with Docker containers running on Windows 10 after the 1709 patch, I thought I was close to solving it once I was granted the admin password to disable and uninstall Sophos Endpoint. Once I uninstalled Sophos, I noted I ended up with a different line number error. The question was, has the problem shifted from Sophos to a new issue or is it more complex than just the one application? We’d already seen that it was complicated, including the Hyper-V with the 1709 patch that was part of the problem.…

So I transitioned in the last years from having a development lab, to VMs, to the cloud and now, tired of slow WiFi, been happily using Docker for most of my demos. As of January, the latest upgrade to Windows 10, aka patch version 109, has been like a bad cat fight. For anyone else using Docker on Windows, it’s very likely that the error “MobyLinuxVM failed to start worker process” is a bane of your existence. After exhausting the standard attempt to uninstall whatever patches were applied by Microsoft, and post researching a solution, you’d discover its more of a…
